Cut The Clutter In 2019

Start 2019 with a clean slate.

January is often a time of reflection and going after your goals. In your home, it may be a time when you notice clutter and disorganization. It can be hard to find time for a full organization overhaul, but there are ways to get it done without over-stressing. As you move into 2019, consider these 4 tips for a more organized home.

A little at a time.

Try setting aside 15 minutes once per week to tackle your clutter in doable chunks of effort. Take 2 boxes or bags into each room of your home. Put things you want to donate in one bag, such as books or outgrown children’s clothing. In the other bag, toss your trash, such as broken toys or badly tattered garments. Do this for just 15 minutes every week and see how much your space can change with a simple decluttering routine.

Discard expired items.

You may be surprised by how much “stuff” you can get rid of just by throwing away expired items around your home. Look in your refrigerator, your medicine cabinet and your pantry. Be sure to dispose of any expired medications in a responsible manner.

Reduce paper clutter.

Use a scanner to keep digital copies of paperwork. Sort the mail and toss the junk mail. Opt for online budgeting software and online calendars to eliminate the need for paper versions. Reduce your paper collection to essentials, such as original birth certificates, and important keepsakes, like handmade cards from children.

Bring in a professional.

If you think your mess is out of control, you can hire a professional organizer to help you sort the clutter. Interview a potential organizer to make sure you feel your personalities are a fit. Ask for references and before-and-after pictures of projects she has managed for other clients.
